Best Jazz CDs - Musicians List / Guide

CLASSIC RECOMMENDATIONS by Cy Green. The essential Jazz Artists are all here.

Today's artists cannot match the passion of yesterday.

This is the music most of the world will never catch up too ... they will always be two drinks behind. SO BE IT.

We Remember Brilliance ...

As tough as it was to survive being a jazz musician, and being miles ahead of the planet musically - it's a wonder they lasted as long as they did. Only a few made real money. It had to be for the beauty man, the beauty because it sure wasn't for the bread.

He's been gone 50 years and is still way too modern for most ears.

                                                         Charlie 'Bird Parker (1920 - 1955)

Possibly, the GREATEST MUSICIAN who ever lived.

Outside of DUKE ELLINGTON  -                                                                                                                                            Why are the three most FAMOUS names in JAZZ HISTORY all trumpet players?

Louis Armstrong    Miles Davis    Wynton Marsalis

(Early Era)                                           (Middle Era)                                  (Current Era)

PEOPLE NOT EVEN FAMILIAR WITH JAZZ  know THESE NAMES

There was one trumpeter who would get respect

and maybe induce a little fear at the same time -

to any of the above, and that would be

                                                                  WOODY SHAW

                                                                                  (1944-1989)

If all you listen to is todays' new jazz CDs, you are missing out on a ton of GREAT STUFF.

The current crop of musicians may be well educated and schooled in jazz, but many are

sterile, cold and really sound alike, actually like robots.  And don't even get us started on FEMALE SINGERS!

The lady who really stands out to us in the past 10 years, is British songstress, CLAIRE MARTIN.

Yes, Yes, Yes -  We like DIANA KRALL -  How could you NOT?

                                                                         The lady has talent!

lt all starts  with an idea and a piece of paper - the SONG.
This is the foundation to all great music. The better the tune,            the better the solos.

The Music is the MIND and
YOU are the soul.

With so many people now producing their own CD's, the major labels   have to be hurting. If it were not for all the treasured stuff they keep in their vaults (like many recordings on the JAZZLIST) , they'd be on the way out.

"I've made a few bucks from my songs that the rockers have done, but as far as my records go, they've never made money. I got my first royalty check from Atlantic last year. Because of a reissue they did, they had to pay me a coupla' hundred dollars royalties. But all the time I was with 'em, I never made any money except what I got in advance. None of my records have ever gotten out of debt. I OWE ALL THE RECORD COMPANIES MONEY. I was with Atlantic from 1961-1976."

Make no mistake about it - the jazz world is not what it once was.     I'm speaking for the American side. Perhaps, it can be compared to the NBA. There's really only a few teams worth watching each season - the rest are just mediocrity at best. Other countries have improved - I don't think we have - there is just too much sameness and complacency in things today. Everyone just seems to go along.

Where have all the innovators gone?

We're talking about BARS for Crissake!

You know, where DRINKING is the priority - not FOOD.

And to all the NINNY WHINERS who get smoke in their hair and on their clothes,
you are not in a HEALTH CLUB, you are in a BAR!

I just want to walk into one again and have a drink and a smoke at the same time

                                                          WITHOUT LEAVING MY SEAT!

                                                           What's the big deal??

If SMOKING is so dangerous to everything living on this planet, then                      BAN TOBACCO!

You two-faced, hypocritical, money sucking morons.

PUT THE ASHTRAYS BACK ON THE BAR, JACK!

Smoking in BARS ....  Government: Stay out of places you don't belong - this is just one of them. The bar owners and regular patrons (80% smoke!) who frequent these establishments, had no choices in this issue. This was FORCED on us.

Tobacco is a legal substance -
and we pay the outrageous taxes to prove it.

There are about 2 1/2 MILLION SMOKERS in Illinois!

There was no compromising in this IDIOTIC BAN. Let's level the playing field. Since it is now 'us against them', Separate Establishments would solve everything. The BAR owner could choose to put in a High Tech Ventilating System. His employees are his choice, anti - smokers need not apply or frequent these establishments.

DDT was banned in 1972. There has never been any scientific proof that it harmed human beings, yet millions of people continue to die from malaria due to the mosquito. This is about the Pursuit of MY HAPPINESS   -       Get yours in a non-smoking BAR!

                                                             ***** End Of Story *****

" I thought we could smoke here, LET'S LEAVE!"

                 I L L I N O I S is a NANNY STATE    .....   Wise Up People!

With the state of the economy as bad as it is, and corruption rampant in the highest levels of our government. With small business owners shutting down quicker than an irate woman getting even with her mate. With two wars going on and unemployment up to 10% - IS THIS EVEN AN ISSUE ANYMORE?

NO, it's not a done deal. It can be changed back!

CHICAGO AREA BAR OWNERS & SMOKERS SHOULD ALL BAN TOGETHER AND JUST START SMOKING AGAIN IN YOUR BAR.  IF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO ARE REALLY AGAINST THIS DUMB LAW, DID THIS AT THE SAME TIME AND REFUSE TO PAY THE FINE - WHAT COULD THE STATE DO? TAKE EVERYONE'S LICENSE AND LOCK US ALL UP?

                                                   JUST CLOG UP THE COURTS!

This STUPID LAW would then be repealed and the CHOICE given back to the PEOPLE, as it should have been from the beginning. The SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS, the "ANTI'S" demanded this law be passed, and when the almighty dollar was dangled in front of our elected officials, they succumbed. And then covered it up for 'health reasons', when it was really about MONEY & CONTROL.

                                                        Goodby  BLAGO!

and now the CHICAGO MACHINE is running the US Government.

                                                              "The new UNTOUCHABLES"

If you thought President BUSH was bad, you ain't seen nothing.
This current administration will make RICHARD NIXON look like a saint.

If I had my way, I'd SWEEP 'EM ALL out to the curb and START OVER!
